“We claim spiritual progress rather than spiritual perfection.”

“We claim spiritual progress rather than spiritual perfection.” Alcoholics Anonymous (1939) · Chapter 5 · How It Works
Where it comes from

From Chapter 5, in the lines that follow directly after the Twelve Steps are listed for the first time.

Today’s reflection

The Steps are ideals, and the book says so in the same breath it lists them. Perfectionism is just self-centeredness in a nicer outfit — and it’s relapse fuel, because if the standard is flawless, one bad afternoon feels like proof you’ve failed entirely. You haven’t. Direction matters more than distance. Were you a little more honest today than yesterday? That counts. Fully.

Buffalo Recovery: Common Questions

How long does detox take in Buffalo?
Medical detox typically lasts 3-10 days depending on the substance. Alcohol detox is usually 5-7 days, opioid detox 5-10 days, and benzodiazepine detox can take 2-8 weeks. Buffalo detox centers provide 24/7 medical supervision throughout the process.
Is medical detox dangerous?
Withdrawal from certain substances (alcohol, benzodiazepines, opioids) can be medically dangerous without supervision. Buffalo medical detox centers provide medications to manage withdrawal symptoms safely, monitoring vital signs, and preventing complications.
What happens after detox in Buffalo?
After completing detox, patients typically transition to inpatient or outpatient treatment for ongoing therapy and support. Many Buffalo facilities offer seamless transitions to their treatment programs. Following up detox with continued care significantly reduces relapse risk.
What can I bring to a detox center?
Most detox centers allow comfortable clothing, basic toiletries, prescription medications (in original containers), identification, and insurance cards. Facilities typically restrict electronics, outside food, weapons, and any substances. Call your chosen Buffalo facility for specific guidelines.
How do I find the right recovery program in Buffalo?
Consider the type of treatment needed (detox, inpatient, outpatient, sober living), insurance coverage, location preferences, and specialized programs. Browse directory listings in Buffalo and call providers to confirm current availability, services, and payment options.
Do facilities in Buffalo accept insurance?
Many treatment centers and detox facilities in Buffalo accept major insurance plans including Medicaid, Medicare, Blue Cross, Aetna, Cigna, and UnitedHealthcare. Sober living homes typically require private pay but some partner with treatment centers for covered clinical components.
